I Can Be An Engineer, Inc. was founded in 2016 by a professional engineer and an elementary school teacher. The pair of sisters, Cheryl and Judy Cunningham, teamed up to create a fun and engaging program designed to inspire young minds and to encourage girls to explore engineering. Frustrated with the lack of available tools to share their message, they co-authored a collection of children’s books that include a delightful, aspiring song about becoming an engineer, both of which are the highlight of every presentation.
Proceeds from the book sales go directly to funding and enhancing I Can Be An Engineer, Inc. programs.
Cheryl A. Cunningham PE
is the co-founder and President of
I Can Be An Engineer, Inc.
Cheryl was the principal owner of an engineering firm in Indiana for over 25 years, and a practicing professional civil engineer for more than 40 years. She was often the only female in the room, and very early in her career, developed a passion to encourage more girls to think about engineering as a viable career. In an effort to increase the number of female engineers, Cheryl co-founded I Can Be An Engineer, Inc. With the focus on young children, Cheryl’s goal was inform, educate, and excite them about engineering. "My goal is to impact the way young children think about engineering and to be a positive role model to young girls. I want both girls and boys to know that girls can be engineers too!"
Cheryl has a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering from Purdue University and is a Professional Engineer in several states.
Cheryl is the co-author of the I Can Be An Engineer children's book collection.
Judith E. Cunningham
is the co-founder and Secretary of
I Can Be An Engineer, Inc.
As an elementary educator, Judy recognized gender bias and glaring inequality in her classrooms and their impact on academic performance, self-esteem, and behavior of even very young children. "I was saddened to see and hear girls diminish their abilities, and how they limited their career options because of their gender. I was specifically frustrated when boys naively affirmed these unfair beliefs." Understanding the power of stories and books to inform, educate, motivate and entertain, Judy played an integral role in the creation of the I Can Be An Engineer children's book collection.
Judy has a Bachelor of Science degree in Early Childhood Education, a Master of Science degree in Reading and Literacy, and an Educational Specialist degree in Teacher Leadership.
